JAMIE AND THE GRAPHIC NOVEL: MR. F. and Mr. A.

So….you really want to know what I think Jamie looks like, do you? [g]

Well, Hoang has been doing wonderful stuff on the artwork for the graphic novel; amazing action, terrific characters, beautiful color and composition—just marvelous. And I love what he's done with Claire ( yes, her hair is somewhat wilder where it ought to be—as when freshly emergent from a gorse bush—but certainly not ringlets, good grief), Murtagh, Dougal, Jack Randall….

Now, Jamie has been a little more problematic, simply because everyone has such a well-defined (if not well-articulated) notion of what he looks like. The descriptions of him are more detailed than those of other characters in the books, because we're looking at him through Claire's eyes, and she's paying close attention. [g] But to take those details and come up with a gestalt that embodies the whole…harder to do.

The consequence of this has been that Hoang's been working with Jamie in different aspects, looking for a good "look" for him that can be used throughout the graphic novel.
And the poor artist, of course, has little to go on other than my rather fumbling feedback—"Well, this one is pretty good, but the jaw is too heavy…. that one's nice, too, but he seems kind of thuggish…and that one's a little too soft, too young-looking, but the hair's great!" sort of thing.

Well, in the preliminary shufflings to and fro, I'd collected a few photos of assorted actors and models who had slanted eyes of an appropriate sort—and many thanks to all the kind people who sent me their favorites (and isn't it a good thing for the men of the world that women have such diverse tastes…)—which I'd sent on to Hoang to add to his mental compost pile.

Among these was a photo of Gabriel Aubrey, and I'd mentioned in re this photo that Mr. A. did in fact have a strong resemblance to Mr. Fraser, in terms of facial physiognomy. So yesterday, an enterprising person named Grace who inhabits one of the "Outlander" discussion boards evidently came across my idle remarks and decided to see if she could make something of them. So she dragged Mr. Aubrey into her PhotoShop for a little revision, and….

(sorry; I tried to make a link for this, but it wouldn't show up in the post, don't know why. You'll have to cut and paste the URL, unless somebody else can fix it for me.)

OK. Yeah. That's very much what he looks like. In case you were wondering. [g]

[I'll venture out on a limb and make a small prediction here: to wit, that half the comments made here will be along the lines of, "Well, that's not what I thought he looked like! I thought he looked like Josh Holloway/Sean Bean/David Cassidy/etc.!" [wry g] To each her own, as I said. But do remember that I can see him.]

Will be back later with comments on the pic itself...(other than my instant reaction, which was, "Ooohh! VERY nice!" [g]) but I wanted to put this out there for everybody in the meantime.

  2. Perfect! Can't wait to see the age lines on him! :)

  3. Actually, that's pretty much how I imagined him to look. Very nice, indeed!

  4. Who cares what we thought up to now, lol. I'll take Jamie looking like Mr. A, any day.

I'm sure that Halle Berry will be pleased as punch to know that our dearest Claire is keeping company with her man.

Thanks for the update Diana. It's great that you keep us abreast of what's going on with the graphic novel and all the other projects.

  5. Oh, yeah! Exactly how I saw him in my head. Awesome!

  6. OMG DIANA because I got a CHILL when I saw him, this is exactly the Jamie of my head and Oh now I cant. type. coherently. Thanks though I'm enjoying it :)

  7. Ooh! I got butterflies just looking at that picture. He's gorgeous! I'll admit, I'd always pictured Kevin McKidd as Jamie, but as you said, Diana, you can see him. *swoons*

  8. Well that made my day a whole lot better! Defantly how I saw him in my head.

  9. Dear Karen--

    Thanks!

And banana-- This is for the graphic novel; he's only 22/23--he hasn't _got_ age lines.

  10. Mr. A has been my pick since someone mentioned him a year ago. And then there are those Macy commercials when you can see him walk and smile - YUM!

And I used to love David Cassidy! (not to mention Bobby Sherman and the Bay City Rollers!).

    ReplyDelete
  11. Well, that is pretty much perfect. [off to swoon and daydream about Jamie...]

  12. Oh my! I too got goosebumps when I saw the picture. Excellent! I'm pleased to know that my image of Jamie was exactly in line with yours (or Grace's interpretation which gets your endorsement! [g].

    Trying to start breathing again....

  14. I can't believe it! MR. A has been my pick for Jamie ever since I laid eyes on him (Mr. A, not Jamie!)

I find it wonderful that through Diana's excellent descriptions of Jamie that we really could picture him, without an actual picture!

Excellent choice- and now it's verified- Jamie really is a hottie!

  15. OK, hold on. His face is pretty impressive. But how does his bottom compare? Halle, if you're out there, let us know.

  16. Oh My Goodness. After seeing Mr. A with his gorgeous blond locks, I couldn't imagine improving him at all. Sheesh, was I wrong!
It's amazing what a little red hair can do!

  17. Delurking (have read this blog from day one) to say that I'm glad to know what your Jamie looks like. Mine, on the other hand, doesn't look like that. And THAT is why books will always be superior to movies and TV.

  18. Oh, hell yeah!! That's MY Jamie.

I had such a rush of hormones that I'm light-headed. My lips are tingling. In a totally good way!

  21. Diana,
Yeah, that confirms it... Jamie's HOT! I love to see Mr. A in the Macy's commercials! I must admit, every semester at Purdue I look for students who look like the characters in THE BOOKS. I haven't found Jamie yet. I thought I found Claire, but the hair was too curly. I did find someone I thought looked like 'Leghair' and we currently have a Hort major who looks like Frank to me. I have to make sure I call him Greg, not Frank! ; )

    Thanks so much for sharing!

  22. He is even better than I imagined!! So rugged and sexy...and those eyes!! Just thinking about him say "slippery as water weed" gives me the chills! Love it!

  23. A most excellent visage. :-) Now, we need to *hear* Jamie. :-)

  24. Do you think you might consider having a Jamie Doll made? Nothing life size...hehehe. But maybe something like the Hula Dolls that bounce around? If so, I'd buy a dozen...One for all my vehicles, my desk and definately my nightstand!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Very nice! I have to admit I see Jamie's hair as a little longer in my imagination - but it's the eyes that count the most!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Well done, Grace, and thanks for that clickable link, Karen H!

That's the closest I've ever seen to my mind's eye young Jamie. Wow.

  28. Thanks, Diana...I am a happy camper with that visual [g].
By the way, a few weeks ago, after leaving my last born at the University of WI at Madison, my husband and I drove down to Chicago for some much needed R&R. At breakfast one day, I spotted a tall man, very nicely built [g] with long red hair, a straight thin nose and slanted cat eyes. He was quite the hunk and looked to be about mid-40ish - my perfect "Voyager Jamie." I don't recall what I ordered or what I ate; I was too busy staring. Hubby was quite amused. [g]

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh my! I feel faint. It's quite like I would have imagined him, and he bears more than a little resemblance to my own red-haired Viking (my husband!). I guess I chose well!

  30. Och--My goodness! I am the Grace who is mentioned by Diana. Imagine my utter delight and shock in seeing myself referenced here!

But--but I am *not* the person who did the Photoshop "magic" on Gabriel Aubry's picture. I merely provided the original picture. Another person, Max, gave that picture to a friend, Amie--and it is Amie who should get proper credit for the "Jamie-ized" version of Mr. A's picture. Here is the original picture that I provided:

    http://tinyurl.com/5w3nek

Another group mentioned that the beard should be red and that he should be wearing a white shirt. So, Amie made the changes:

    http://tinyurl.com/5zeqv3

By the way--the first time I saw Gabriel Aubry's picture--I did think it was Josh Holloway. [grin]

    Thanks for this 15 minutes
    of "fame",
    Grace

  31. Gee, no hardship imagining him as Jamie....other than making a better match of his hair and beard color, I wouldn't touch a thing! (Well, actually, given the chance I probably WOULD touch, but not in the sense of changing anything...)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Dear Melanie--

Actually, red-headed men often have dark beards; my husband's beard is very dark auburn--or was, before it began to go silver!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hi I'm the Max who was the go between for Grace, who provided the original picture of Aubry on a discussion group, and Amie, a friend of mine, who is the person who Jamie-ized it for us. Amie is only vaguely familiar with the first book Outlander. She was just having fun and isn't a part of the discussion group so with her permission I shared her creation there, where it was picked up by Susan and kindly forwarded to Diana. Amie and I are quite thrilled that Diana likes it. Thank you! - Max (who still prefers Dougal over Jamie *hehehe*)

  34. PERFECT!! No, really :) That's a great Jamie!!!!!!! Mmmmm Jamie.

    *looks bashful*

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh how fantastic!! There were slight differences in my head, but only very slight. I can't tell you how wonderful a treat it is to finally see them as you, the author, intended! I'm so excited about this graphic novel! I can't wait!!! Between ABOSAA and the graphic novel, I am positively beside myself with anticipation! ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  36. DAMN! I didn't think it could be done. Someone hit a home run on Jamie. I was afraid I would have to read two-hundred different descriptions of what people thought he looked like. If he looks like this at twenty-two he'll only get better with age (if that's possible).
Just thinking about the hair. My husband had blond hair but his beard was red. Now it's pretty much all the same color(gray).

    ReplyDelete
  37. Oh, I'm so out of the loop... didn't even know who Gabriel Aubry was so after clicking on the photobucket link, I Googled him. Tough job, but someone had to do it...

  39. This is for Vicki. I gave out a snort when I read your blog calling Loahaire-- Leghair. I've missed pronounced half the names in the books. Even if I have learned the proper annunciation I till revert back to the way I originally thought.

  40. Mitzi I am LMAO at the thought of bobblehead Jamie's but I'd buy one too ;) I'd prolly buy the lifesize one first though ROFL. xoxo melzie

PS I could discuss Jamie and this stuff all day. Is there a 12 step program?! Nevermind I don't really want to be cured ;)

  41. Sharaf,
I know her name is L'eery... but I always like "Leghair" for her name! : ) I know some on the Ladies of Lallybroch boards call her "Logwhore"!

  42. I must admit I really do like that rendition of Jamie, but in my own version, he's a little less pretty boy and more rugged, if you can get more rugged! The eyes are PERFECT, though and yes, the hair is a little bit too carrot for me as well.
Did I miss links somewhere to the other work from the graphic novel? Images of Claire and the rest?

    ReplyDelete
  43. I must admit that I was confused when I saw the image and then had to read the context behind it. Indeed this is very much like the Jamie in my head...the young Jamie. Because I'm reading DOA at the moment, my vision of him is slightly altered at the moment. But for Outlander, this is brilliant. (I suggest that his brows and beard colour be changed to match as others have said) I might add that I have had a strange reaction making the connection with a real picture instead of the one in my head.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I like how you see Jamie. I like it very much.

  46. To those of you who think Jamie's hair in this picture is "too carroty" [g], I would say based on my own experience that we're only going to see that in outdoor scenes in the GN, in full sunlight. My hair does the same thing - goes from orange-red in sunlight to dark auburn indoors.

Diana can confirm this, of course, but I would think Jamie's hair will change color based on the various lighting conditions.

  47. Ah, Monsieur Aubry....nice to see Canada recognized for something besides snow, maple syrup and hockey. (g)

I think he looks amazing as a model for a young Jamie - handsome, slightly dangerous, intelligent, and that nose...oh, that perfect nose. I can hardly wait to see what the (equally amazing) artist does with it. What fun you must be having with this!

  48. There is a certain picture of Liam Neeson in character as Rob Roy; I have it for the wallpaper on my computer. He is kilted up and holding a sword, probably a claymore. He is "red-heided" and -bearded, and he looks exactly how I imagine our older Jamie (after Claire comes back) looks. I don't have a link to the photo, but it was pretty popular in its day. Being a gal of a certain age myself, I am much more attracted to this more mature Jamie. But of course both of them work for me considering the span of years. Debbie in San Diego

    ReplyDelete
  49. Well...not the usual controversy here. I too think it is close to perfect, and do often imagine him with hair a bit longer, however, he did have it cut short on a number of occasions and so this could be one of those times when it had not quite grown out yet. I also imagined his eyes a little more intense blue.

    Overall; I loved it!

  53. You're very welcome, Ms. Gabaldon! It was my pleasure, I loved working on Jamie, and as Max can testify I welcome any reason to tinker in Photoshop LOL. And without Max and her input and the photo of Mr. A that Grace suggested, I never would have made the pic, coz I had given up trying to make Jamie pics without a model, although I've made plenty of pics with Max's model for Dougal (Kevin Smith - Ares on the Xena TV show).

And I have to say that I do love your choice for young Jamie! I've always thought Gabriel Aubry a hottie too. [g]

Barbara mentioned the eyes not being intense enough (I agree), but I can make the color and brightness of the eyes anything the author specifies. Sapphire blue, cerulean blue, sky blue, slate blue? While waiting for your direction, here is Jamie14, with eyes brightened up a little [g]:

  69. Hey Diana,

Lari here from the Writer's Forum...I think he looks absolutely delish! I never could invision a face when I read the books, just a silhouette of the man, but he looks just like you described, but I thought his skin was more bronze? That could be in later books as he ventures to North America, if I recall!
At any rate, he looks wonderful to me!!

Thanks so much for this blog Diana! I truely enjoy it.

  75. Diana,

"And banana-- This is for the graphic novel; he's only 22/23--he hasn't _got_ age lines."

Oh, I know. :) I was more imagining how -this- particular version of Jamie would look like in say "Fiery Cross" or "Breath of Snow and Ashes." I've got to admit; both the Mr. A version and my imagined version of an older Mr. A are stellar! Congrats! I'm eagerly anticipating the release of the graphic novel.

And to Ms. Karen Henry, who said, "My hair does the same thing - goes from orange-red in sunlight to dark auburn indoors;" Mine does the exact same thing too. I wonder if it's the same in most auburn-headed people? I've noticed that carrot-red or strawberry-blonde doesn't do the same thing.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Such a fantastic job! He looks exactly like what I imagined, only I see him with longer hair....

And as for those who mentioned 'leghair' I chose that name for my character in Warcraft (just to be different) and no one ever gets it right, they just call me 'leghair' LOL! I gave up trying to correct them.

Diana I loved these books so much I have officially worn out the original copy I have of Outlander because 1) I have it read it so many times and 2) because I have lent it to so many friends to get them hooked on the Jamie/Claire story (and it worked). We can't wait for more!

I get so frustrated by the people who *insist* upon Gerard Butler. He is, without a doubt, one helluva delicious Scot, but a Jamie he is not.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I'm with you, mamaraven. I've never understood why so many people see him as Jamie. In my mind, Gerard Butler's all wrong in so many ways, but I guess each to her own.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I just love old movies, not fond of celebs today, and I'm beginning to see Jamie more as a flaming-haired, Scots-accented Errol Flynn.
Haha. It's that hint of humor Jamie seems to have about most everything.

I think if everyone else from that time looks older than they are, then Jamie should too. He's seen a lot of life at his age.

Wow, if these were my books and characters, Diana, I would feel so happy that so many people have their own personal images of the characters and they feel pretty strongly about it. That is fabulous, and also 'my' dream.
    Kudos to you!

I still think Gerard Butler is a fantastic choice to portray Jamie, since he can act, but I'd give Gabriel a shot at anything he wanted! Thanks Amie and Max! And, of course, thanks Diana for continuing your blog...I look forward to each entry!

  92. I've loved your books so much that I convinced my husband to go on a self-led bicycle tour in 2001 through Perthshire, Scotland, to see the countryside and visit castles.

Recently, I've convinced several mommies in my support group for at-home mothers to read Outlander for our book club. That led to what I call the Outlander Cult. And I've been adding on to the cult daily. :D

Love, love, LOVE your writing and imagination, Diana! Can't wait for the next book in the Outlander series!

  95. I just showed the picture to my husband (to whom I have been telling the events of the novel to). I started by asking him if he had put any thought to what Jamie looks like. His reply was "a big red Norse". So I showed him this rendition, which he approves, however he did say that he actor looks like Kevin Federline! No offense to Mr. Federline, but I'll stick with Mr. A and a touch of my imagination

  99. What a great visual! It took me a few times of looking at Mr A done up as Jamie to see him as the Jamie I have in my head, but it's pretty close. As another person wrote, I see Jamie a bit less pretty and a bit more rugged. Still very yummy though...

    On a slight side note:
It took my mom giving me two Outlander books before I started reading the series. Ever since then I couldn't put them down.

The books aren't the best thing to read in the public buses because I kept laughing out loud and crying in turns.. I don't care though, the books are just amazing!

  102. I didn't know where else to post this but I found an actor who would be a good young Ian... He's Scottish (in my opinion a must), he was the little William Wallace in Braveheart so many moons ago, and I might add a total hottie. This in the link to his IMDB page. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0732703/
Sorry if this is an inappropriate place to post this, but I wasn't sure where else to put it.

  103. This is great. At one point (just for fun) I was making a wish list cast for a movie and I had him down to play Jamie! Right on, perfect!

  106. This is late, but I just caught the show 'Crusoe' the other night and I have to change my opinion to Philip Winchester the way he looks in that role. Only he'd have to get the red hair obviously.

Maybe it's the shirt, the weapon and that they have Sean Bean playing his father? :)

  108. I never really had a clear picture of Jamie in my head because ... well, I'm not sure really. I think that his personality was just so vivid that I almost didn't need a face to go with it (I know that sounds odd). Claire, on the other hand, I have a very nice picture of.

However, I LOVE this pic of 'Jamie'!!! The smirk on this face is very appropriate ... lol

  109. Oh My! That's Jamie!

I said in another post I thought Gerard Butler could play him only because he's a manly man, Scottish, and a good actor but I take it back I would hate to see Jamie changed in any way!

I can't wait for the Graphic Novel! You've given us the perfect man in your books now gratefully we have a picture!

That look he has on his face is so Jamie, a little earnest, pretty deep, good humored, brave, and verra easy to rest your eyes on.

I do hope you do a graphic novel for all the books as I find myself rereading them I can't get enough of Jamie and Claire!

  112. It is so Jamie, so exactly it is scary. Mrs. Gabaldon must have seen him somewhere. Pity he cannot act. Olwen
