SEPTEMBER

September 3-6 (Labor Day Weekend)

Decatur Book Festival
Downtown Decatur, GA (8 miles from Atlanta)
No set schedule as yet, but I always do at least one major talk, plus one or more book-signings.

and

Dragon*Con
Atlanta (This con is immense, and held in four hotels at once. I don’t yet have any sort of schedule, but will be attending with Betsy Mitchell, the DelRey editor for THE EXILE, and we’ll be doing at least one panel together, with slides of artwork from the graphic novel. I’ll certainly also be doing autographing.)

I’ll be switching back and forth between the Decatur Festival and Dragon*Con, so catch me at whichever one is most convenient and/or suited to your personal style!

September 11 – BOOKMARKS Book Festival
Winston-Salem, NC
Speaking and signing - times TBA.
www.bookmarksbookfestival.org for details.

September 21st – LAUNCH PARTY FOR THE EXILE!!
THE EXILE is the new graphic novel, with Jamie’s (and Murtagh’s) side of the OUTLANDER story, script by me, spectacular artwork by Hoang Nguyen.

The launch will be held at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts (http://www.scottsdaleperformingarts.org/ ),
And will feature not only me, books, and food—but also a slideshow with commentary by me and Hoang Nguyen, who did the artwork for THE EXILE, and who will also be available to answer questions and autograph books.

While this event is sponsored by (and books supplied by) The Poisoned Pen Bookstore, they asked me to inform you that instead of reserving a book at the bookstore, you need to buy a ticket from the Center for the Arts (http://tickets.scottsdaleperformingarts.org/tickets/calendar.aspx ) to the event, and the price of your book is included in that. (You can also buy a ‘companion’ ticket for $5, if you want to bring a friend who doesn’t want a book.) [NB: The Center may not yet have their September program up; if not, please check back in a week or two.]

If you won’t be in town, or don’t live here, but would like to order a copy of THE EXILE signed by me, Hoang, or both of us, pleased contact Patrick@poisonedpen.com, or phone the bookstore at 480-947-2974.

Then comes a short(ish) book-tour. This is arranged by Random House, the publisher, and so far, I have only the following information available:

(Yes, I am on the program, even though not listed on the website at the moment.)

October 22-24 - Surrey International Writers Conference
Surrey, BC
This is a paid writers conference (and an excellent one; the only one I do every year), but they do also have an open-to-the-public mass autographing session on Friday evening. This is held at the Guildford Sheraton Hotel, which hosts the conference, and is usually from 5:45 – 7:30 PM.

I may do one or two outside (public) events to promote THE EXILE while I’m attending the conference, but no information on that as yet.

  1. I'm so excited that you will be in the Atlanta area! It's about a 5 hour drive for me, but I have lots of friends in the area, so I'm going to try my best to be at that book festival. I didn't think you would ever come to the south! :)

    ReplyDelete
  2. sigh....you never come to Houston!

    ReplyDelete
  3. Oh ... WOW! I was bummed when I realized I breezed through New Bern, NC the week after you and I figured I'd just have to wait my turn until you came somewhere near Atlanta ... I am smiling VERY widely. Maybe I could get my friend to drive down for the weekend! Oh ... wishing you well given all this travel ;)

  4. Sorry if this is a silly question, but you won't be at the San Diego Comic-Con?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Wow YOU are one busy muchachita!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Dear Megs--

No, I have to stay home and work _sometime_. [g] And San Diego is too far in advance of the EXILE publication for it to be very effective for promotion.

  7. Wooooo freakin' hooooooo!!!! You're coming to LA, you're coming to LA, you're coming to LA!!!!!

    See you at Vroman's, babe.

  8. I am soooooo jealous of those attending the August Outlander Tour! The Earl of Cromartie gave us a wonderful tour of Castle Leod during our June tour, and he was so charming and informative. We loved it. You are a very busy woman, and I hope you get a chance to enjoy yourself in Scotland!

  9. The Launch Party sounds really cool with Hoang Nguyen being there too, such talent he has!

  10. Pretty hectic Schedule Diana, hope your knee's fully recovered by then.

You guys who have the chance to go and see Diana are so lucky! I live way too far... (Chile, if you're wondering), so I can't attend any event at all. All I'm praying for is that I can get my copy of The Exile.

    ReplyDelete
  11. According to Warwick's, the San Diego event will be at The Gillispie School, which is located at 7380 Girard Ave in La Jolla. I hope to see you there.

  12. Several months ago I got my girlfriend hooked on you Outlander novels; she has managed to read them all in a very short amount of time (lucky for her that she did not have to wait between books like I did). So now we are both eagerly anticipating the release of THE EXILE this September.

After reading through your appearances schedule, I noticed that there is only one Canadian date as yet...any chance more will be added? We are in Ottawa, Ontario and we greatly enjoyed your appearance last fall for the release of ECHO. Would be a pleasure to see you again.

  13. This is very exciting news!

Curious how the book signings go...

We know this is the promotion tour for The Exile(!!!), but is it possible to bring and have another book signed as well? Would love to have Outlander signed, too.

    Safe travels!

  14. Dear Lindy--

Oh, yes, you can certainly--with the exception of the launch party--bring other books you'd like signed. Sometimes a bookstore will want you to put a sticky label on to prove that you brought them in, but most stores are OK with you bringing them. I'm fine with it anytime. [g]

The exception for the launch party is because a) they're expecting 700-800 people, and we'll be there all night if I sign other books (NB: We'll probably sign a ton of books beforehand, so people who don't want a personalization can just take one of those, without having to stand in a long line), and b) since the Poisoned Pen bookstore is paying for this event, they'd really like people to buy the book exclusively from them--as opposed to getting it cheap from Amazon and bringing it to _their_ party, I mean. Which I gotta say, seems reasonable.

So, for the launch party in Scottsdale ONLY--you just buy a ticket to the event, and the price of your book is included in said ticket. No outside books allowed. (You can of course order books from the store--any books [g]--that you want shipped somewhere else, or plan to pick up later.)

  15. Thank you so much for the information, Diana. Denver is looking forward to your visit!

  18. Hello, Diana!!
I know you have no control over this, but I wish publishers would get a clue that we DO read here on the West Coast too, lol, in the Northwest :D Seems like they have ALL the fun back East most of the time!! I be a little jealous ;) I am SO looking forward to Graphic Novel!!!! Prelims are amazing!!

    Love and Hugs,

  19. Dear Amber--

Actually, I will be doing several Canadian appearances toward the end of October. I haven't yet got details, though--will add them when I do!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Dear Bonnie--

Actually, they almost always send me to Seattle, and sometimes even Portland, on one of the big regular booktours. This one is a short tour, though--there's just way too much traveling.

    ReplyDelete
  21. This is so depressing, I'm from the DC area but will be starting school in Wisconsin this fall so I'll miss the National Book Festival. I've been looking out for a book signing in my area since discovering and falling in love with your series last summer. I'm almost contemplating taking the flight home just for that weekend, it'd be totally worth it. I suppose Wisconsin is just not a very happening place for book signings and such.

    ReplyDelete
  22. You will be doing more stops in Canada?! How exciting! Let me put in a good word for Alberta--we'd (and I speak for the whole province when I say this ;D )love, Love, LOVE to have you here.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Well, look, guys--

The unfortunate fact is that I just can't be everywhere. [wry g] And if I expect to ever finish Book Eight, SCOTTISH PRISONER, or anything ELSE, there's a distinct limit to how many places I _can_ be.

The publisher--who has to pay to transport me to all these places, as well as going to the trouble of arranging events--decides where they think the most effective places for me to go are, on the basis of consultations with the sales reps, who are very familiar with the bookstores and sales patterns in their areas.

There's a small bookstore in a tiny town in...actually, I can't remember...whose owner writes every time I have a new book out, offering to do a tea or some other special event, and telling me how much her patrons would LOVE me to come. Well...I'd love to come, too. But the bottom line there is that she might sell forty books, and her sales aren't reported to the New York Times.

See, from the publisher's point of view, they send authors on tour in order to concentrate sales of a new book near the date of the book's release, in order to a) get the book on the NYT list, or b) drive it farther up the list. That's it. Very venal [g], but true, alas.

So they aren't going to send me to anyplace that's not likely to get a big turnout, alas--nor to anyplace lacking a big independent bookstore or one of the huger B&N/Borders store--because those are the stores whose input determines Da List.

  24. I actually feel verra bad for you. That's a hell of alot of travel to put on to you (with a recovering knee) when I'm sure all you really want to do is write Book 8. LOL (okay so maybe a little greedy on my part that I really want you to finish Book 8)

All the best to you and hopefully with so many dates (and dates for Canada to be announced (YEAH!!), I could sneak away to a signing too)

    Take care, MichelleKCanada

  25. I swear no matter how hard I try I always miss you in Decatur and its only 10 minutes from the house. Why oh why must we take the girls to thier grandparents in Florida that weekend? Do you think my husband could make it by himself for 6 hours in the car with a 4 year old and a 6 month old? Don't worry I already know the answer, so I'll try to catch you next year. :D Enjoy the Atlanta area while your here.

    ReplyDelete
  26. So happy to hear that there are more Canadian dates to come!

    Until then...safe travels to you!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Texas, Texas, Texas! Nuff said.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Just saw a date for Pasadena and I can tell you I'm verra excited. Will be there with all the other addicts!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Want to have lunch when you're here in San Diego? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  30. That's excellent about the Canadian dates! Hopefully Toronto's nestled in there somewhere :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. I sure hope you'll be speaking earlier in the day in Winston-Salem, because then I can talk my husband into making the trip with enough time for us to get home Saturday night! I am looking forward to this so very much!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I am so excited that you will be at DragonCon in September since I'll be there with my husband!! I never dreamed that I would have the chance to see you in person. No books have ever become such an obsession for me as your Outlander series. And I'm happy to say that I've convinced several co-workers to read them as well (one even yelled at me because it was my fault that she couldn't get anything else done because she couldn't stop reading!!). Thanks for bringing Claire and Jamie into our world. :) Gina D - St. Charles, MO

  33. I am SOOOOO happy that you are coming to Kansas City and just 3 days after my birthday (happy birthday to me!) I am looking forward to this and wanted to make sure that I can bring other books (besides THE EXILE) to sign (other books meaning the others by you!). I hope to be coming with my friend who introduced me to your books some 12 years ago. VERY EXCITED!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Dear jazzmomma--

That should be fine. I'm always happy to sign whatever people want to bring. _Occasionally_ a bookstore will want to limit the number of books someone can have signed, if there's a huge crowd, but it's usually possible to have the person next to you carry some of your overflow, if that should be the case. [g]

    ReplyDelete
  35. Dear Deb--

Would love to, but a) I have no idea what time I'll be hitting San Diego, and b) from my experience with book-tours, they don't allow for leisurely (or even hasty) lunches. One is lucky to get a banana in the backseat.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hello Diana,

I'll be seeing you at the National Mall in Washington DC in September. I'm sooo happy and very excited to finally get to meet you in person. If I have to camp out there overnight, I will. and Yes I'm so glad that you said we can bring your other books to be signed as well. Yeah!!! I'm ecstatic!!

    Wan

    ReplyDelete
  37. Dear Wan--

Whoa, a minute. The National Book Festival is different. They _won't_ let you bring in other books to be signed, because they have huge crowds and strictly limited time; each author only gets one hour to sign books, then has to leave to make room for the next. So to make sure as many people as possible get their new book signed, they don't allow outside books at all. Bookstores generally do, but not the Book Festival. Hope to see you there anyway, though!

  38. Thank you. Thank you for Clair and Jamie, and John and William, and Jem and Ian, and all the others! Am sorry to be such a fast reader. Have inhaled last and am not sure what to do during the on-going hiatus. Do you ever plan to come to Stockholm? Though, that being said, the Highland Games sound like fun and are not too far away. Hmm... Take good care, and not just for selfish reasons of my own. Cheers!

  39. Diana,
Wish you were coming further south...we in South Florida love you! I have gotten several of my friends hooked since i moved here...I'd say come for the warmth, but you have that...so come for the beach!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Dear Diana,

Thanks for giving me warning. I will be seeing you nonetheless and I'm still estatic. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Dear Diana, I'm Italian and I'm a big fan of yours and your amazing books! On Sunday I'll arrive in Scotland for my holidays and when I found out that you'll be in Strathpeffer for the Highland Games next Saturday I coudn't believe my luck and I've changed the whole route at the eleventh hour to meet you! ^_^ I'm soooo happy to have this incredible chance!! And there is also the gathering of the CLAN MACKENZIE, at CASTLE LEOD!!! I didn't know that! Am I dreaming?? :o) Is there also Jamie maybe??!! :oD I keep my fingers crossed...In the meantime, have a nice trip!

  42. I agree with the above poster- an Alberta girl like me- if you can return to Calgary's "Wordfest", we would be so thankful!
So many of us fans enjoyed your talk and signing.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh No!
    I don't believe it.
You are FINALLY going to be in my neck of the woods (Long Island) and where am I going to be?
In Colorado, visiting my kids and grandkids.
    Drat!

  44. Just looked at the rest of the schedule. Maybe I can get up to Denver on 9/22. I'll make a point of introducing myself if I make it.
    Hope to see you....

  45. Dragoncon again, wow, I feel very lucky. Last year I went down just for the day with some friends to see Diana, this year I'll be there the entire weekend, yea! So much fun at the reading, and seeing the evolution of the graphic novel, can't wait to see what this year will bring. So do we need an Outlander group get together?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hi,
I have been with your wonderful characters since Outlander was published. I quietly wait for the next book while enjoying the others over again. I have recommended them to many of my family and friends--and have discussed them at length with most. I am trilled that you are coming about 10 minutes from my home in Long Island NY. I knew that if I was patient I would get to see you in person. Thank you for the writing these books!! See you in October.

  47. Bonjour madame Gabaldon,

Sorry for my english, it's not very good, so I will write in my language, french/Québec.

  48. Hi Diana,

Do you happen to have more contact info for the Borders in Westbury, NY (October 7th)? I searched Borders website and can't find a store in that city. And, apparently there are two "Westbury"s in NY, one being much closer to me than the other.

    Thanks!
    Sara

    ReplyDelete
  49. I would assume it's the Borders on Old Country Road, near the former Fortunoff's. It came right up when I searched borders.com. Are you sure you didn't spell something wrong?
I'd say "see you there," but I'll be in Colorado. On the positive side, though, I'll hopefully be able to get to the Denver appearance with my daughters, whom I turned into Outlander fans last year, and some friends, who they've infected.

  51. Hi Diana,

If you have not checked it out already, you have been voted for the most "Favorite Author" of the 2010 National Book Fest, so far. And of course, I voted. See you on September 25th.

  52. When Echo came out - I drove to an hour and a half to Dayton (Books-A-Million) to see you. Here in Columbus, Ohio (the STATE CAPITAL I might add) we have a good Gabaldon following. There's a HUGE B&N here... I emailed Katie in NYC, and told her Central Ohio needs to be remembered ESPECIALLY for Scottish Prisoner!!! Love your writing. Thank you!

  53. Hi Diana,
Do you know if your publisher has any plans to send you to England at all? Also, why is the first book titled Cross Stitch over here? when my friend recommended it to me I thought it was a book about sewing! Outlander sounds far more appealing.
    Can't wait for book 8 x

    ReplyDelete
  54. Appreciate all the votes! Thank you!

As for England--I have a separate UK publisher, and yes, they brought me over in January when ECHO came out. They haven't yet bought THE EXILE, so not going for that.

As to "Cross stitch"--that was my original working title for the manuscript. The US bought it first, thought that boring [g] and asked for a new title, so I thought of OUTLANDER. Then we sold it in the UK, and _they_ said, "Oh, we love the book, but to us, an outlander is a South African. Can you think of something else?" "Well, I _did_ call it Cross Stitch," I said, and they said "Oh, lovely!" and there you are. [g]

    ReplyDelete
  55. Oh no, can't believe I missed you in January :(
Thanks for letting me know how the different titles came about. I've never heard of the term outlander been applied to South Africans! I know several South Africans living over here and they were not aware of it either. Nevertheless, interesting to learn how these things work. I imagine thinking of a title must be very difficult at times-how to convey the spirit of a 800 page book in a few words? Quite daunting!
